ENSA was founded back in 2002 when the German Bundestag agreed on a “youth program for advanced education concerning development policy and social solidarity”.
In early 2005 the ASA program of the former InWEnt Organization (Capacity Building International, Germany) developed a concept through its ASA network on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). They presented their first pilot project half a year later: in cooperation with the NGO “streetfootballworld” ASA created “the other part of the pitch”. Selected students from five schools in Germany got to know and learn about the work of NGOs in Kenya, Brazil, Peru, Senegal and South Africa.
Over the years the ENSA program supported and professionally accompanied more than 60 encounters between students from Germany and developing or transitional countries. Non-governmental organizations are the key to the project’s success and therefore represented at ENSA´s board of advisors. Hence they schedule the program, give assistance to schools at face and also provide essential input for the preparation and follow-up seminars.
Since 2010 ENSA is under the administration of the GermanAssociation for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH.
Aims of the ENSA Program
- ENSA promotes educational exchange between Germany and developing or transitional countries concerned with development politics.
- ENSA focuses on study trips for students and teachers helping them to understand global dependencies and strengthen their motivation to be proactive and pass their acquired knowledge on to others.
- ENSA enhances mutual understanding by offering exchange programs in which schools from Germany and developing or transitional countries participate in joint initiatives. In their dialogue with each other they share their knowledge and learn to cope with cultural differences.
- ENSA supports sustainable cooperation between schools and non-governmental organizations. It is only then that global developmental issues can be rooted at a political level in the North and the South towards long-term, structural change.
- ENSA is committed to a globally equitable world. Our educational work included in the partnerships ensures that young people and multipliers acquire the necessary skills to spread their knowledge and abilities back in their respective home countries.
